During the Covid 19 Pandemic, I’ve been struck by so many photos and videos on social media of flowers being dumped at the big Holland Flower Markets and it absolutely broke my heart to see flowers that could’ve still have given joy to someone else, bulldozed away, destined for the rubbish dump. I knew my friend and flower farmer, Adene from Adene’s Farm Flowers in Wolseley was in the same predicament, with loads of flowers from cancelled functions and weddings, and no set-off point. I’ve always been inspired by Lewis Miller’s flowerflashes in New York City, a florist that surprises NY City after big functions with leftover flowers in random places like dumpsters and against lamp posts.
So I contacted Adene with my idea to flowerbomb our little hometown of Tulbagh’s essential services stores and Church, and she was game! So I rounded up my trusted florsit friend Marcel from Design by Marcel, and we worked through the night on the Monday, a few nights before South Africa’s lockdown, to adorn Tulbagh in flowers! We had such an incredible response, with everyone taking photos and posting it on social media, it spread like wildfire!
Adene contacted me on the Tuesday afternoon and said she had another 600 bunches of flowers she picked that morning, that she couldn’t sell either and if we’re keen to do it again? Heck yes! We had to go even bigger, because there were 10 times more flowers! We decided on Huis Vergenoegd, a prominent landmark and old aged home in the heart of Paarl. The elderly in Huis vergenoegd had been on lockdown since early in March, not even being allowed to see their families. We thought this would be the ideal way to spoil them a bit! But we knew we had to get help, because it was literally a 4-ton truck full of flowers this time! We contacted our other florist friends to come and help pull off this gigantic flowerbomb! The residents of Huis Vergenoegd were allowed to come and view the work of art, creating a beautiful yet emotional moment. We had cars hooting, many to all necks turning, pedestrians & passersby stopping – these flowers bought so much joy!
We had several beautiful write ups in local and international newspapers, that absolutely blew our minds!
I feel honoured to be a part of such an amazing community of florists and flower growers, that can come together under such dire circumstances and still create beauty with the language we all know best: FLOWERS These flowerbombs are also an ode to all our beautiful couples who had to cancel/postpone their weddings in this time and lose out on precious time with friends and family coming from all over the world. And our florist peers all over South Africa who also had to close shop and lose so much business due to this pandemic. We all will rise again! “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” Jeremiah 29:11
